Fénykerülés

Fénykerülés, also known as photophobia or light sensitivity, is a medical symptom characterized by an intolerance to light. This discomfort can manifest as eye pain, tearing, squinting, or headaches when exposed to normal levels of light. It is not a disease in itself but rather a sign of an underlying condition affecting the eyes or the nervous system.

The causes of fénykerülés are varied. Ocular conditions such as uveitis, keratitis, conjunctivitis, iritis, and dry eye syndrome can all lead to increased light sensitivity. Migraine headaches are also frequently accompanied by photophobia, with the aversion to light often intensifying during an attack. Neurological disorders like meningitis, encephalitis, and certain types of brain tumors can also cause this symptom due to increased intracranial pressure or irritation of the optic nerve pathways.

Certain medications, including some antibiotics and diuretics, can cause light sensitivity as a side effect. Even temporary factors like pupil dilation from an eye exam can induce photophobia. The severity of fénykerülés can range from mild annoyance to debilitating discomfort, significantly impacting an individual's daily life. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, eye examination, and potentially further investigations to identify the root cause. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition and managing the symptom, which may include wearing sunglasses, using dim lighting, or prescribing specific medications.
