Fémesátmeneti, meaning "metallic transition" in Hungarian, refers to the phenomenon observed in certain materials where they transition from a non-metallic to a metallic state. This transformation is typically driven by changes in temperature, pressure, or the application of an electric field. The key characteristic is a significant and often abrupt change in electrical conductivity, moving from a high resistance characteristic of insulators or semiconductors to the low resistance typical of metals.

Several physical mechanisms can underlie fémesátmeneti. In some cases, it involves a structural rearrangement of the material's atoms, altering the electronic band structure. This can lead to the formation of delocalized electrons, which are essential for metallic conductivity. In other instances, the transition might be related to changes in electron correlation or charge ordering within the material. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a well-known example of a material exhibiting this type of transition, where it switches from an insulating monoclinic phase to a metallic rutile phase at around 68 degrees Celsius. Other materials like some rare-earth oxides and chalcogenides also display fémesátmeneti.
