Fátima

Fátima is a city in Portugal, located in the Santarém District. It is most famous as the site of the Sanctuary of Fátima, a major Catholic pilgrimage destination. The sanctuary commemorates the Marian apparitions that are said to have occurred there in 1917.

The apparitions, according to tradition, were experienced by three shepherd children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto. They reported seeing the Virgin Mary on several occasions between May and October 1917. The Virgin Mary is said to have entrusted them with three secrets. These secrets, and the events surrounding them, have become a significant part of Catholic devotion and prophecy.

The Sanctuary of Fátima is a vast complex that includes the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Millions of pilgrims visit Fátima annually, particularly on May 13th and October 13th, the anniversaries of the first and last apparitions. The site is recognized as one of the most important Marian shrines in the world.

Beyond its religious significance, Fátima is a growing urban center. The city's economy is largely driven by tourism and religious activities. It has a well-developed infrastructure to accommodate the large number of visitors it receives. The area around Fátima is also known for its agricultural production.
