Fytostanol

Fytostanol, also known as plant stanol, is a type of phytosterol, which are compounds found naturally in plants. Specifically, fytostanol is a saturated form of plant sterol. It is structurally similar to cholesterol, a type of lipid found in animal cells. This similarity is key to its purported health benefits.

Fytostanol is often added to certain foods, such as margarines, yogurts, and spreads, in a process called esterification to improve its solubility and absorption. When consumed, fytostanol is believed to interfere with the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive system. It competes with cholesterol for absorption sites in the intestines, leading to a reduction in the amount of cholesterol that enters the bloodstream.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that regular consumption of foods enriched with fytostanol can lead to a significant reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. LDL cholesterol is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol because high levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. By lowering LDL cholesterol, fytostanol may contribute to a reduced risk of heart disease. It is important to note that fytostanol does not appear to affect high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, often called "good" cholesterol.

The amount of fytostanol typically recommended for achieving these cholesterol-lowering effects is around 2 grams per day. It is generally considered safe for consumption, and side effects are rare.
