These components, though varying in specific design throughout history and by region, generally served a common purpose: to guide ships and boats safely through treacherous waters and into harbors.

The most fundamental component of a fyrbåk was the light source itself. Historically, this often involved a large bonfire fueled by wood, peat, or even whale oil. The intensity and duration of the fire were crucial for its effectiveness. To enhance visibility, the fire was frequently housed within a structure designed to focus and direct the light. This structure could be a simple stone tower or a more elaborate framework.

Reflective elements were also important components. Early versions might have utilized polished metal surfaces, such as brass or copper, positioned behind the flame to amplify and project the light outwards. Later developments saw the incorporation of lenses, similar to those used in modern lighthouses, to further concentrate and direct the beam.

The supporting structure, often a tower or a raised platform, was a significant component. It needed to be sturdy enough to withstand harsh weather conditions and elevate the light source to a sufficient height to be visible from a distance. Access to the fyrbåk for fuel and maintenance was also a practical consideration, often involving stairs or ladders as integral components. The overall arrangement and design of these components aimed to create a reliable and visible navigational aid for maritime traffic.
