Futómkerékfékezés, also known as coaster braking or backpedal braking, is a type of braking system integrated into the rear hub of a bicycle. It operates by the rider pedaling backward. When the pedals are rotated in reverse, internal mechanism within the rear hub engages a braking surface, which slows or stops the bicycle. This system is commonly found on children's bicycles, cruiser bikes, and some single-speed or fixed-gear bicycles.

The mechanism typically involves a cam and roller system. When the pedals are pushed backward, a cam rotates and pushes rollers outward against a braking surface, usually a drum or cone within the hub. This friction generates the braking force. Reversing the pedal motion again disengages the braking mechanism, allowing the bicycle to roll freely.

Futómkerékfékezés offers a simple and integrated braking solution, eliminating the need for external brake levers and cables. This can contribute to a cleaner aesthetic and reduced maintenance. However, it also has limitations. The braking force can be less powerful and modulated compared to hand-operated rim or disc brakes, and it requires the rider to have their feet on the pedals to engage the brake. In situations requiring rapid deceleration or precise control, such as downhill riding or during emergencies, hand brakes are generally preferred for their superior performance and control. The absence of hand brakes on some bicycles equipped with coaster brakes can also be a safety concern for riders accustomed to traditional braking systems.
