Funiculars
Funiculars are a type of rail system designed to move people and goods up and down steep slopes. A typical installation uses two counterbalanced cars connected by a single continuous cable that runs between them and over a fixed pulley at the top of the incline. The cars ride on rails and are guided by wheels, with a passing loop in the middle so the two cars can meet and pass each other. When one car ascends, the other descends, providing natural counterweight that reduces energy consumption. A drive system at one station powers the cable, and braking and safety devices control speed and stop positions.
Drive and control systems vary. In many arrangements the motor or winch at the lower end winds
