Fullformatssensorer

Fullformatssensorer, often referred to as "full frame" sensors, represent a specific size standard for digital image sensors. They are named after the 35mm film format, with a physical dimension of approximately 36mm x 24mm. This size has become a benchmark in the digital photography world, particularly for professional and enthusiast cameras.

The primary advantage of a fullformatssensor is its larger surface area compared to smaller sensors found in many consumer-grade cameras, such as APS-C or micro four-thirds. This larger area allows the sensor to capture more light. Consequently, full-frame cameras generally perform better in low-light conditions, producing images with less noise and a wider dynamic range. They also excel at achieving a shallower depth of field, which is desirable for isolating subjects and creating background blur (bokeh).

Another significant characteristic is its equivalence to the traditional 35mm film perspective. When using lenses designed for 35mm film cameras, a full-frame sensor reproduces the intended focal length without any cropping effect. This means a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera behaves like a 50mm lens, whereas on an APS-C sensor, it would exhibit a narrower field of view, akin to a 75mm or 80mm lens due to the crop factor.

Fullformatssensorer are typically found in higher-end digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) and mirrorless cameras. While they offer superior image quality and creative control, cameras equipped with these sensors tend to be larger, heavier, and more expensive than their smaller-sensor counterparts. The lenses compatible with full-frame cameras can also be a significant investment.
