Fugenlinien

Fugenlinien are lines that mark the location of joints in building components, such as masonry, concrete, or prefabricated panels. They define where elements meet and create intentional spaces that accommodate movement, tolerances, and construction sequences. On facades and in interiors, Fugenlinien often appear as regular, visible lines that contribute to the architectural rhythm and align with openings, cornices, or floor levels.

Functions and purpose

Fugenlinien serve several purposes: they control and accommodate movement caused by shrinkage, thermal expansion, moisture changes, and settlement; they provide a deliberate separation between different materials or sections to prevent crack transmission; and they enable weatherproofing and sealing of joints. In construction, certain joints are planned as construction joints to mark the end of a concrete pour, while others function as expansion or control joints to manage long-term movement and crack formation.

Types

Common types include expansion joints (Dehnfugen), which allow for large movements; movement joints (Bewegungsfugen), which accommodate differential movement between elements or assemblies; and control joints (Kontrollfugen), which direct where cracks may occur in a controlled manner. In masonry and façades, Fugenlinien also reflect modular patterns and align with horizontal and vertical grid lines.

Design and installation

The placement and spacing of Fugenlinien depend on material properties, environmental exposure, and structural design. They should be aligned with architectural features, such as window openings and floor levels, to maintain visual coherence. Joint materials, including sealants, fillers, backer rods, and profiles, must be chosen for durability and appropriate elasticity to permit movement while preventing moisture ingress.
