Fugenbrett

Fugenbrett, also known as expansion joint board or joint filler, is a material used in construction to create a gap or joint between two or more building components. This gap allows for movement that can occur due to thermal expansion and contraction, or structural settlement. Without adequate jointing, these forces can lead to cracking and damage in materials like concrete, masonry, and plaster.

The material used for fugenbrett can vary. Traditionally, it was made from materials like felt, cork, or wood fiberboard. These materials are compressible and can absorb some degree of movement. Modern fugenbretter are often made from synthetic materials such as foamed polyethylene, polyurethane, or closed-cell foam. These are chosen for their durability, resistance to moisture, and consistent compressibility.

Fugenbrett is typically installed during the construction phase. It is placed between sections of concrete slabs, walls, or floors before they are poured or laid. The fugenbrett is then usually removed or remains in place depending on the specific application and the type of material used. If it remains, it may be covered with a sealant or joint filler to protect it from the elements and provide a finished appearance. The primary function of fugenbrett is to prevent stress build-up and ensure the long-term integrity of the structure.
