Frühdienst

Frühdienst, commonly translated as early shift or morning shift, denotes a work shift that takes place predominantly in the early hours of the day. In German-speaking countries the term is used across multiple sectors, including healthcare, public service, hospitality, and retail. The exact timing varies by organization and contract, but a Frühdienst typically starts in the early morning, for example around 5:00–7:00, and lasts until the early afternoon, often 12:00–15:00.

In hospitals and clinics, Frühdienst usually covers the handover from overnight staff, patient rounds, morning medication

Shifts such as Frühdienst are part of shift work and can affect circadian rhythms, with potential health

Etymology and usage: The word Frühdienst combines Früh (early) with Dienst (service/shift). It contrasts with Spätdienst
