Fritidshjems

Fritidshjem, often translated as after-school homes or leisure homes, are Danish institutions providing care and organized activities for children outside of regular school hours. Typically catering to children from around 6 to 10 years old, these facilities are a common part of the Danish welfare system, designed to support working parents by offering a safe and stimulating environment for their children.

The primary function of a fritidshjem is to offer children a structured yet flexible space where they can engage in a variety of activities. These can include creative pursuits like drawing, painting, and crafts, as well as more active options such as outdoor play, sports, and games. Homework assistance is also often provided, ensuring children have a quiet place to focus on their studies. The emphasis is on free play and social interaction, allowing children to develop their independence and build relationships with peers and adult supervisors.

Fritidshjem are staffed by trained professionals, often referred to as pædagoger (pedagogues), who are responsible for the well-being and development of the children. These staff members create a positive and inclusive atmosphere, facilitating activities and mediating social dynamics. The institutions are usually integrated with or located near primary schools, making drop-off and pick-up convenient for parents. They operate on a fee-based system, though the cost is often subsidized by the municipality, ensuring accessibility for most families.
