Frigilianas

Frigiliana is a municipality and village located in the province of Málaga, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. Situated in the region of La Axarquía, it is perched on a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, approximately seven kilometers inland from the coast. Frigiliana is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved historic quarter, which is characterized by its narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses adorned with colourful flowerpots, and its distinctly Moorish heritage.

The village is divided into two main areas: the old Moorish quarter, known as El Barribal, and the newer Renaissance quarter. El Barribal is a labyrinth of cobblestone alleys, steep staircases, and charming squares, with many houses displaying intricate ceramic tiles. This area reflects the village's past under Moorish rule, which significantly influenced its architecture and layout. The newer part of town dates back to the 16th century and was built by the Christians after the Reconquista, featuring a more grid-like street plan.

Frigiliana's economy is largely driven by tourism, attracted by its beauty and tranquil atmosphere, as well as by agriculture, particularly olive oil production and wine. The village is also known for its sweet wines and local crafts. Annually, Frigiliana hosts a renowned three-culture festival, celebrating the coexistence of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish traditions that have shaped the region. Its strategic location offers visitors easy access to the beaches of the Costa del Sol and the natural beauty of the nearby Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park.
