Almijara

Almijara is a mountain range located in the province of Málaga, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It forms part of the larger Penibaetic System. The highest point in the Almijara range is La Maroma, which reaches an elevation of 2,066 meters (6,778 feet). This peak is also the highest point in the entire province of Málaga.

The Almijara mountains are characterized by rugged terrain, steep slopes, and significant geological formations, including limestone cliffs and caves. The vegetation varies with altitude, ranging from Mediterranean scrubland at lower elevations to pine forests and more sparse vegetation near the summits. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and is a protected natural park, the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, which it shares with the neighboring Sierras de Tejeda and Alhama ranges.

The natural park is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts, offering numerous trails that traverse the varied landscapes. The views from the higher altitudes are extensive, often reaching the Mediterranean coast. The Almijara mountains have a history of human settlement, though it is primarily sparse, with traditional agricultural practices and small villages found in the surrounding foothills.
