Frequenzklassen, also known as frequency classes or frequency bands, are divisions of the electromagnetic spectrum or sound spectrum into ranges based on their frequency. In acoustics, frequency classes are used to categorize sounds based on their pitch, with lower frequencies corresponding to deeper sounds and higher frequencies to higher-pitched sounds. In radio technology and telecommunications, frequency classes define specific ranges of radio waves allocated for different purposes, such as broadcasting, mobile communication, or navigation. These classifications are essential for organizing and managing the use of these invisible but vital parts of the spectrum.

The division of the electromagnetic spectrum into frequency classes is standardized by international bodies like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). These classes have specific names and associated frequency ranges, such as Very Low Frequency (VLF), Low Frequency (LF), Medium Frequency (MF), High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), Ultra High Frequency (UHF), Super High Frequency (SHF), and Extremely High Frequency (EHF). Each class has unique propagation characteristics and is suited for different applications. For example, VHF and UHF are commonly used for television broadcasting and two-way radio communication, while HF is used for long-distance radio communication due to its ability to reflect off the ionosphere.

In the context of sound, frequency classes are often used in audio engineering and psychoacoustics to describe the perceived characteristics of sound. For instance, the bass frequencies are in the lower range, mid-range frequencies are in the middle, and treble frequencies are in the higher range.
