Instead of looking at how a signal changes over time, as in the time domain, the frequency domain shows the amplitude and phase of each frequency present in the signal. The most common tool for moving between the time domain and the frequency domain is the Fourier transform. The Fourier transform decomposes a complex signal into a sum of simple sinusoidal waves of different frequencies. The result of a Fourier transform is a frequency spectrum, which graphically displays the magnitude and phase of each frequency component. This spectrum provides insights into the signal's characteristics that might be hidden in its time-domain representation.

In signal processing, analyzing a signal in the frequency domain allows for tasks such as filtering, where unwanted frequencies are removed or attenuated. For example, noise reduction often involves identifying and eliminating noise frequencies from a desired signal. In audio engineering, equalizers operate in the frequency domain to adjust the balance of different frequencies, shaping the tonal quality of sound. Similarly, in telecommunications, different frequency bands are allocated for various communication channels, and understanding the frequency domain is crucial for efficient transmission and reception. The concept extends to understanding the behavior of electrical circuits, mechanical vibrations, and even the properties of materials.
