Freigestellt

Freigestellt is a German adjective that describes someone who has been released from regular duties or obligations, or whose employment is temporarily suspended. The related noun Freistellung denotes the act or period of release. The term is widely used in employment law, civil service, and organizational contexts. It does not imply termination of employment.

In employment law, an employee can be freigestellt from work for a defined period to attend training, fulfill a legal obligation, care for a family member, participate in an official task, or pursue other approved duties. The question whether the freistellung is paid or unpaid depends on the contract, collective agreements, or statutory rules. It may be granted for a fixed term or until the purpose of the release is completed.

Beurlaubung and Freistellung are related but distinct. Beurlaubung typically refers to leave for personal reasons such as vacation, while Freistellung emphasizes release from duties for a specific purpose or assignment. The terms and conditions of freistellung—such as duration, pay, and eligibility—are usually spelled out in contractual agreements or internal regulations.
