Freieinheiten

Freieinheiten is a German-language term that literally translates to free units. It is not part of formal metrology and does not denote a single standardized concept. Instead, it is used in various niche contexts to describe units that are defined or chosen freely by the user rather than being fixed by a canonical system. In practice, Freieinheiten often appear in modelling, simulation and education, where analysts or teachers introduce arbitrary reference units to simplify calculations or to illustrate relationships between quantities.

In modelling and simulation, Freieinheiten function as placeholder units. For example, a model of a physical process might use dimensionless or user-defined units for clarity, with the understanding that results must be converted to standard units for interpretation. The freedom to choose units can facilitate comparisons across subsystems or datasets that originate from different measurement conventions, but it requires explicit documentation of the chosen references.
