Fotografije

Fotografije is the plural noun used in Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin to refer to images created by recording light with a camera. The singular form is fotografija. The term is broadly synonymous with photographs or pictures in English and is used in both everyday language and formal contexts, including museums, archives, and media.

Origin and etymology: fotografija comes from Greek photos "light" and graphein "to write," via international forms of photography. Fotografije as a word rose with the adoption of photography in these languages in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Creation: Modern fotografije can be produced with cameras ranging from smartphones to professional digital cameras, and printed or stored digitally. The term covers analog photographs (silver halide, daguerreotypes, etc.) and digital images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF).

Genres and use: Fotografije can document people (portraits), places (landscapes), events (documentary/reportage), art, science, or journalism. They function as evidence, memory, or expression. Metadata such as EXIF is often associated with digital fotografije and informs technical details.

Rights and ethics: Ownership normally belongs to the photographer or rights holder; use often requires permission, licensing, or public domain status. Ethical considerations include consent, portrayal, and manipulation.

Storage and preservation: Photographs are archived in physical albums and digital libraries; preservation involves proper storage conditions, metadata, and backups.
