Fotofilters

Fotofilters are accessories placed in front of a camera lens or inside a filter system that modify light before it reaches the sensor. They can be physical devices or digital effects applied in post-processing. Physical filters are typically glass or resin and come in screw-in, clip-on, or square/rectangular filter holder formats. Their purposes include altering color balance, controlling exposure, reducing reflections, and shaping contrast.

Common types include UV or protection filters, which absorb ultraviolet light and protect the lens; circular polarizers, which reduce reflections from non-metallic surfaces and enhance color saturation; neutral density filters, which reduce overall light transmission to enable long exposures or wider apertures; graduated neutral density filters, which transition from dark to clear to balance bright skies with darker foreground; color correction filters that warm or cool the image; and specialty filters such as infrared, star effects, or diffusion.

In practice, filter choice depends on lens size, filter thread, and system compatibility. Many photographers use screw-in sizes, while professional setups employ square/rectangular holders that allow stacking multiple filters. Digital photography offers many equivalent effects in post-processing, but optical filters provide real-time effects, metering advantages, and physical lens protection.

Historical note: filters have been used since the early days of photography, evolving from simple color filters to multi-coated glass and advanced holder systems. Modern fotofilters emphasize coating quality and durability to minimize reflections and ghosting.
