Fosforipinnoitteet refers to phosphor coatings, a type of surface treatment applied to various materials. These coatings are primarily composed of phosphors, which are luminescent substances that emit light when excited by an external energy source, such as ultraviolet radiation or an electron beam. The specific composition of the phosphor and the application method can vary widely depending on the intended use.

Historically, phosphor coatings have been crucial in technologies like cathode ray tubes (CRTs) found in older televisions and computer monitors. In CRTs, an electron beam strikes the phosphor-coated screen, causing it to glow and create images. Different colors are produced by using different types of phosphors, such as yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) doped with cerium for yellow light, or lanthanum oxybromide activated by europium for red light.

Beyond display technology, phosphor coatings find applications in lighting, including fluorescent lamps and LED lighting. In fluorescent lamps, an electric current excites a gas, which in turn emits ultraviolet light that strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube, causing it to emit visible light. In LEDs, phosphors are often used to convert the blue light emitted by the semiconductor chip into white light, making them suitable for general illumination.

The development of phosphor coatings continues to evolve, with ongoing research focusing on improving efficiency, color rendering, longevity, and developing new phosphors for specialized applications like security markings, medical imaging, and scientific instrumentation.
