Fortklassifisering

Fortklassifisering is a term used in Nordic information management to describe the process of reclassifying items after their initial classification. It entails applying updated or more precise criteria to determine the most appropriate category, tag, or subject heading for an object, record, or data item. The goal is to improve accuracy, retrieval, and governance.

The process typically follows an established governance framework. Triggers can include new information, policy or standard updates, organizational changes, or feedback from users. A classification review is conducted by authorized personnel who compare the item against current taxonomy and mapping rules, adjust its category, and document the rationale. Changes are versioned, and an audit trail records who, when, and why a change was made. If necessary, related records may also be recoded to preserve consistency.

Fortklassifisering is common in libraries, archives, and data repositories, but the concept also applies to other areas such as healthcare coding, environmental classifications, or taxonomy projects that evolve over time. It often requires a clear mapping between old and new categories to support traceability and data interoperability.

Benefits include improved searchability, compliance with updated standards, and more accurate reporting. Challenges include maintaining consistency during transitions, resource costs for reviews, and the risk of fragmentation if multiple governance bodies reclassify independently. Effective fortklassifisering relies on proper metadata, change management, and clear authorization rules.
