Forståelsesevne

Forståelsesevne is a Danish term describing the cognitive capacity to understand information relevant to a decision, to appreciate its potential consequences, and to communicate a deliberate choice. It is typically considered in relation to specific decisions and can vary over time and in different contexts.

In practice, forståelsesevne is most often discussed in medical, legal, and ethical settings. It is closely linked to the notion of informed consent: a person is regarded as having sufficient forståelsesevne to consent to treatment or participate in research when they can understand the information presented, weigh the options, and clearly express a course of action.

Assessment and components commonly referenced in professional practice include four elements: understanding the information given, appreciating how it applies to one’s situation, reasoning about options and consequences, and communicating a stable decision. Assessments are typically tailored to the decision at hand and may involve structured interviews, discussions, and, when needed, supplementary support such as simplified information or decision aids.
