Forschungsbereich

Forschungsbereich is a German term used in the academic and research context to denote a defined thematic area of scholarly inquiry. In many universities and research institutions, a Forschungsbereich represents an organizational unit or a planning domain that gathers researchers working on related topics under a common strategic umbrella. The exact status and size of a Forschungsbereich vary: it can be an internal subdivision of a department, a cross-faculty cluster, or a loosely coordinated network spanning several institutes.

Key features typically include a stated research focus, a set of flagship projects or core domains, and a management structure such as a director or coordinating committee.
