Formuleringsmasse

Formuleringsmasse, often translated as formulation mass, is a preparatory mixture used as the base in the development or production of formulated products. It is not a finished product in itself; rather it provides the rheological, chemical, and physical properties that enable final formulations to be built upon.

Formuleringsmasse consists of carriers or solvents, binders, fillers or pigments, active ingredients, and additives such as surfactants, stabilizers, rheology modifiers, antioxidants, preservatives, and pH adjusters. The exact mix depends on the target product, such as cosmetics, paints, adhesives, or pharmaceuticals.

Preparation involves weighing and mixing, emulsification or milling, and controlled temperature to achieve a uniform mass with the desired viscosity and particle size. Quality controls include viscosity, pH, phase stability, and compatibility with other components.

Applications include cosmetics and personal care products, paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, pharmaceutical creams and suspensions, and agricultural or food-related formulations, among others. The formulation can be adjusted to influence spread, drying time, or release of active ingredients.
