Formalisuus, or formality, refers to the degree to which actions, language, and procedures follow established rules, roles, and formal structures rather than informal custom or spontaneity. The term is used across disciplines such as linguistics, sociology, organizational theory, jurisprudence, and philosophy, and its meaning varies with context.

In language and social interaction, formality describes registers and politeness strategies. It influences word choice, pronoun use, titles, and the level of directness in speech and writing. Formal language often conveys respect, distance, or official status, while informal language supports closeness and ease of communication. In many cultures, formal language is more prevalent in official contexts, ceremonies, and written correspondence.

In organizations and bureaucracy, formalization denotes the extent to which routines, roles, and communications are codified in rules and documents.
