Formalistic is an adjective describing tendencies that prioritize form, structure, or formal rules over content, meaning, or substance. It is used across disciplines to characterize approaches that emphasize how something is made or arranged rather than what it is about.

In aesthetics, criticism, and the arts, formalistic or formalist theories treat the value of a work as depending on its formal properties—composition, technique, rhythm, color, or syntax—rather than biographical context or social function. In literature, formalistic criticism is associated with schools such as the New Criticism, which analyzes a text primarily through its language and structure. In film and visual arts, formalism stresses the arrangement of elements and visual/style choices, focusing on how a work experiences the viewer rather than external interpretations.

In music, formalistic analysis concentrates on form, structure, and developmental processes, sometimes contrasting with interpretations based on program, emotion, or narrative associations.

In philosophy and mathematics, formalism refers to a stance that regards mathematics as manipulation of symbols according to rules, with meaning arising from formal systems rather than real-world interpretation. Hilbert's program is a notable historical example. In law and public policy, formalism describes adherence to rules and procedures, emphasizing literal text and formal steps over outcomes or substantive justice.
