Formalismin

Formalismin is a hypothetical concept representing the philosophical stance that the ultimate reality or meaning of something, particularly in art and culture, is inherently found in its formal structure and objective presentation rather than its subjective interpretation or external context. This viewpoint suggests that the intrinsic qualities, such as composition, technique, style, and the interplay of elements, are the sole determinants of value and significance. Proponents of Formalismin would argue that any attempt to derive meaning from historical background, the artist's intent, or the viewer's emotional response is extraneous and detracts from the pure appreciation of the work itself.

This perspective emphasizes a detached and analytical approach. In visual arts, for example, a Formalismin analysis would focus on line, shape, color, texture, and spatial relationships, deeming narrative, symbolism, or social commentary as secondary or irrelevant to the artwork's essence. Similarly, in music, the emphasis would be on melody, harmony, rhythm, and form, with lyrics or emotional impact considered supplementary. The core tenet is that the work of art, or any object of study, possesses an objective, internal logic that can be understood and appreciated through its formal attributes alone. This approach seeks to establish a universal and objective standard for evaluation, free from the vagaries of individual taste or cultural relativism.
