Formaldehydabgabe

Formaldehydabgabe refers to the release of formaldehyde, a volatile organic compound, from materials into the surrounding air. This process is common in many indoor environments where products containing formaldehyde are used. Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a pungent odor and is often used as a preservative or in the production of various building materials and household items.

Sources of formaldehyde off-gassing include furniture, pressed wood products like particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF), insulation, carpets, paints, adhesives, and some textiles. When these materials are manufactured or installed, residual formaldehyde can slowly evaporate into the air over time. The rate of formaldehyde emission depends on factors such as the material's composition, temperature, humidity, and ventilation in the area.

Exposure to formaldehyde can have health implications. It is classified as a known human carcinogen by several health organizations. Short-term exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as coughing and wheezing. Longer-term or higher-level exposure may lead to respiratory problems and is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers.

Measures to reduce formaldehyde exposure include ensuring adequate ventilation in buildings, using low-emission products, and allowing new materials to off-gas in a well-ventilated space before occupying the area. Testing indoor air for formaldehyde levels can also help identify problematic sources.
