Forgettability

Forgettability refers to the tendency or likelihood of something being forgotten. It is a subjective quality that can apply to memories, information, objects, or even people. The degree of forgettability is influenced by various factors, including the significance of the item, the amount of attention paid to it, the emotional context, and the passage of time. Memories that are vivid, emotionally charged, or frequently recalled are less likely to be forgotten. Conversely, mundane details or information that is not reinforced tends to be more forgettable.

The concept of forgettability is explored in psychology, particularly in studies of memory and cognition. Theories such as decay theory suggest that memories naturally fade over time if they are not accessed. Interference theory posits that new information can obstruct the recall of older information, contributing to forgettability. The opposite of forgettability would be memorability or permanence.
