Forestage
Forestage refers to the area of a theater stage that extends forward from the main acting space, typically in front of the proscenium arch. This portion of the stage is often referred to as the apron. It provides an additional performance area where actors can interact more directly with the audience, creating a sense of intimacy and immediacy. The forestage can also be used for specific staging choices, such as presenting monologues, introducing characters, or housing musical ensembles. Its design and size vary significantly depending on the theater's architecture and historical period. In some theaters, the forestage might be a relatively small extension, while in others, it can be a substantial platform. The use of the forestage is a deliberate directorial choice, aiming to enhance the storytelling and audience engagement. It represents a physical extension of the performance space, bridging the gap between the world of the play and the spectators.
