Fonttimetriikka refers to the measurement and analysis of typographic characters. It encompasses various aspects of how fonts are designed and spaced, influencing readability and visual appeal. Key elements include x-height, the height of lowercase letters without ascenders or descenders, and cap height, the height of uppercase letters. Ascenders and descenders are the parts of letters that extend above or below the main body.

Kerning is the adjustment of space between specific pairs of characters to improve visual balance and prevent awkward gaps. For example, the space between "AV" is often adjusted. Tracking, on the other hand, is the uniform adjustment of space between all characters in a block of text. Leading refers to the vertical space between lines of text, crucial for legibility.

The design of a font's baseline, the invisible line on which most letters sit, and its stroke thickness also contribute to its overall metric properties. Understanding and applying font metrics allows designers to optimize text for different media and purposes, ensuring clarity and aesthetic harmony.
