The term is not widely standardized and is often treated as a linguistic variant or a speculative category within the broader concept of fomites. It blends the word fomite with the diminutive suffix -illa, signaling a micro level of interaction between objects and infectious agents.

A fomiteilla refers to inanimate objects or surface features that harbor microbes on micro- or nano-scale textures, pores, or crevices. These micro-fomites may persist on materials that are frequently overlooked by routine cleaning, such as certain textiles, microfabricated surfaces, or devices with complex topographies. Like larger fomites, fomiteillae can contribute to indirect transmission when a person touches the contaminated object and then touches mucous membranes or food.

Transmission and persistence

Pathogens on a fomiteilla can be transferred through contact or via fomitic pathways, especially in settings with high touch rates or inadequate cleaning. The persistence of microbes on these micro-surfaces depends on material properties, environmental conditions, and the organism’s biology.
