Fomblin

Fomblin is a brand name for fluorinated polyether lubricants produced by Solvay (formerly Ausimont). The Fomblin family comprises PFPE oils and greases designed for lubrication under extreme conditions, especially in vacuum environments and at elevated temperatures. The defining characteristics are extremely low vapor pressure, chemical inertness, wide temperature stability, good dielectric properties, and high lubricity on metal surfaces. These attributes help minimize outgassing and contamination in sensitive systems.

Typical properties include resistance to oxidation and corrosion, excellent stability across a broad temperature range (approximately -200°C to +250°C depending on grade), and compatibility with many metals and elastomers used in precision equipment. Because of their nonreactive and nonflammable nature, Fomblin lubricants are favored for applications where traditional hydrocarbon oils would outgas, decompose, or react with process gases.

Applications span vacuum technology and precision engineering. They are commonly used as lubricants for bearings and gears in vacuum pumps and vacuum chambers, as anti-wear lubricants for space instrumentation, and as protective films or lubricants in semiconductor processing equipment and hard disk drive assemblies. In high-vacuum or ultra-high-vacuum contexts, Fomblin oils are selected to reduce outgassing and maintain clean surfaces, though they require careful handling to avoid contamination of sensitive surfaces.

Handling and safety: PFPEs like Fomblin are largely inert and have low acute toxicity, but they are not completely non-hazardous. They can be persistent in the environment and are not readily biodegradable. Spills should be contained, and waste disposed of according to local regulations. Users should follow the material safety data sheet for specific grade guidance and exposure precautions.
