Folliikulite

Folliikulite is a common skin condition characterized by inflammation of the hair follicles. It can appear anywhere on the body where hair grows, but it is most frequently seen on the face, neck, chest, back, and buttocks. The condition often manifests as small, red bumps or pustules that may resemble acne. These bumps can be itchy or slightly painful.

The inflammation is typically caused by a bacterial infection, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus, though other bacteria and even fungi can also be responsible. Factors that can contribute to the development of folliikulite include friction from tight clothing, shaving or waxing, excessive sweating, and the use of oily skin products. Damage to the hair follicle can create an entry point for microorganisms.

Folliikulite can be classified into different types based on its appearance and the underlying cause. Superficial folliikulite affects only the upper part of the hair follicle and often resolves on its own. Deep folliikulite involves the entire follicle and can lead to more significant inflammation, pain, and sometimes scarring or permanent hair loss in the affected area.

Treatment for folliikulite usually depends on its severity and extent. Mild cases may improve with good hygiene practices and over-the-counter antiseptic washes. For more persistent or severe infections, a doctor may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics or antifungal medications. Preventing friction, managing sweating, and proper hair removal techniques can help reduce the risk of recurrence.
