Folikuliti is a common skin condition characterized by the inflammation of hair follicles, leading to small, raised bumps on the skin. These bumps may appear red, white, or skin-colored and can be accompanied by itching, pain, or pus formation. Folikuliti typically occurs where hair grows, including the arms, legs, scalp, and face, though it can develop anywhere on the body.

The condition arises when bacteria, fungi, or viruses infect the hair follicles. Common causes include bacterial infections (such as *Staphylococcus aureus*), fungal infections (like *Malassezia*), or irritation from shaving, tight clothing, or excessive sweating. Weakened immune systems, poor hygiene, or skin conditions such as acne or eczema may also increase susceptibility.

Symptoms of folikuliti vary depending on the underlying cause. Mild cases often present as small, red bumps that may itch or feel tender. More severe infections can lead to larger, pus-filled lesions known as furuncles or carbuncles. In some cases, the condition may spread, causing widespread inflammation or systemic symptoms like fever.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, with healthcare providers sometimes performing a skin scraping or culture to identify the causative organism. Treatment depends on the cause but may include topical or oral antibiotics for bacterial infections, antifungal creams for fungal causes, or antiviral medications in viral cases. Keeping the affected area clean, avoiding irritation, and wearing loose clothing can help prevent recurrence.

Most cases of folikuliti resolve with proper treatment, though persistent or severe infections may require medical intervention. Preventive measures, such as maintaining good hygiene, avoiding tight clothing, and using mild soaps, can reduce the risk of developing the condition. In rare instances, folikuliti may indicate an underlying health issue, such as diabetes or immune deficiency, warranting further evaluation.
