Foleylaging is a term used by some sound designers to describe the intentional modification of Foley sound effects to suggest aging or the passage of time within a scene. The word combines Foley—referring to the creation of synchronized sound effects in post-production—and aging, indicating a temporal or maturational dimension in sound design. It is not widely documented as a formal technique, but appears in practitioner discussions and niche workflows.

Origin and use: The term emerged in informal circles in the 2010s as digital processing made it easier to alter the perceived age of sounds. It is often applied to footsteps, doors, fabrics, and ambient cues to imply worn materials, longer wear, or environmental degradation. The goal is to support narrative cues about age without reshooting or redesigning the scene.

Techniques: Approaches include time-stretching or compression to adjust tempo and perceived activity, high-pass or low-shelf filtering to change brightness or muffling, and dynamic range adjustments to alter impact. Layering older-sounding Foley with newer tracks can create a sense of material fatigue, while subtle saturation, distortion, or modulation adds texture. Convolution with impulse responses of older rooms, vehicles, or environments can deepen the sense of antiquity, and reverberation with longer decay can imply aged spaces.

Applications and considerations: Foleylaging is used in film, television, and video games to reinforce aging themes or settings without changing dialogue or visuals.
