Folaatori

Folaatori is a team sport played on a grassy or artificial turf field between two teams of seven players, including a goalkeeper. The aim is to move a spherical ball into the opponent’s goal using a combination of passing, dribbling, and shooting. The game emphasizes speed, coordination, and strategic positioning.

Origin and name: Folaatori originated in the coastal region of Folaotia in the early 20th century, and the name is believed to derive from local terms meaning 'ball' and 'tactics'.

Gameplay: The field is rectangular with goals at each end and a halfway line. Games are divided into two halves, with stoppage time for injuries and substitutions. Teams may use passes and dribbles; the goalkeeper is the only player allowed to handle the ball within the penalty area. Fouls result in free kicks or penalties; out-of-bounds play is restarted with throw-ins. Substitutions are limited.

Equipment: A size-5 ball is used for adults; goals are roughly 3 meters wide by 2 meters high; players wear light protective gear and shin guards.

Competition and governance: The sport is governed internationally by the Folaatori Global Federation (FGF), founded in 1968. The FGF oversees a world championship held every four years, along with regional tournaments and domestic leagues.

Global reach and development: Folaatori is played in more than 40 countries; youth academies exist; the sport emphasizes inclusivity and safety.
