Focuri
Focuri is a Romanian word that translates to "fires" in English. It is commonly used to refer to bonfires, campfires, or any open flame used for warmth, cooking, or ceremonial purposes. The term can also be used metaphorically to describe strong emotions or passions. In folklore and traditional customs, focuri often play a significant role, particularly during festivals and celebrations. For instance, on Saint George's Day (Sfântul Gheorghe), which falls on April 23rd, people in rural Romania light large bonfires, known as "focuri de Sfântul Gheorghe," to ward off evil spirits and welcome spring. These events are often accompanied by music, dancing, and communal gatherings. The act of jumping over the focuri is believed to bring good luck and health. Beyond these traditional contexts, the word focuri can simply denote the presence of fire, such as in a fireplace or a burning hearth. The imagery of focuri is deeply ingrained in Romanian culture, symbolizing community, purification, and the cyclical nature of life.
