Flytendekrystaltermokromi refers to the class of materials and phenomena in which liquid-crystal systems exhibit reversible color changes in response to temperature changes. The term combines elements meaning 'liquid crystal' and 'thermochromism' and is used to describe temperature-dependent optical responsiveness in cholesteric and other liquid-crystal phases.

Several mechanisms drive the effect. In cholesteric liquid crystals, the molecules form a helical structure with a temperature-dependent pitch. The selective Bragg reflection leads to perceived color; as temperature changes, the reflected wavelength shifts, producing a visible color change. In polymer-stabilized or dye-doped systems, color range and robustness can be enhanced. In nematic or smectic systems, thermochromism can arise from changes in order parameter or phase transitions to isotropic phase, often accompanied by changes in birefringence.

Materials used include cholesteric LC mixtures, polymer-stabilized LC films, and microencapsulated thermochromic dyes integrated with LC matrices. Fabrication methods involve thin-film deposition, rubbing or photoalignment for orientation, and microfluidic or inkjet approaches for patterning. Response times range from milliseconds to seconds, depending on thickness, dopants, and boundary conditions. Hysteresis and environmental sensitivity (humidity, UV exposure) can affect performance.

Applications span temperature indicators, passive sensors, smart windows and textiles, and color-changing displays. Flytendekrystaltermokromi devices aim for reversible, repeatable color response and relatively low-cost fabrication, though commercialization faces challenges in long-term stability and calibration across temperatures.
