Flutningsflækjur, translated roughly as transport bottlenecks, is a concept in transport planning and logistics that refers to locations or situations where the capacity of a transport link is unable to meet the demand placed on it. In such places, throughput slows, travel times become unpredictable, and queues form upstream, reducing the overall performance of the network. Flækjur can occur in any mode—road, rail, maritime, or multimodal hubs—and may be temporary or persistent.

Causes include physical constraints such as narrow lanes, merges, or limited berth and yard capacity; operational limits like suboptimal signaling, schedule misalignment, and limited equipment; and external factors such as weather, incidents, or surges in demand. They are often identified where utilization is repeatedly high, delays exceed specified thresholds, and variability rises.
