Fluoresenssivalaistus, often referred to as fluorescent lighting, is a type of electric lighting that utilizes fluorescence. It works by passing an electric current through a gas, typically mercury vapor, contained within a glass tube. This current excites the mercury atoms, causing them to emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The inside of the tube is coated with a phosphor material, which absorbs the UV radiation and then re-emits it as visible light.

The color of the light produced by fluorescent lamps can vary depending on the specific phosphor coating used. Common color temperatures range from warm white to cool white, and even daylight simulations. Fluorescent lighting is known for its energy efficiency compared to incandescent bulbs, consuming significantly less electricity to produce the same amount of light. This efficiency contributes to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.

However, fluorescent lamps also have some drawbacks. They contain small amounts of mercury, which is a hazardous substance and requires proper disposal. Additionally, fluorescent lights can sometimes produce a slight flicker, which can be noticeable to some individuals and may cause discomfort or eye strain. The lifespan of fluorescent lamps is generally longer than incandescent bulbs, but they can eventually dim or fail.
