Flughafensturm

The Flughafensturm, also known as the Airport Tower, is an observation and restaurant tower located at Frankfurt International Airport in the city of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The tower was originally built in 1969 as part of the airport’s expansion program and served as a navigation aid for aircraft as well as a control tower for ground operations. The structure is a reinforced concrete and steel skeleton rising to a height of 50 metres (164 feet), with the viewing platform situated at the 30‑metre level.

During the 1990s the tower underwent extensive renovations that converted its upper levels into a panoramic restaurant and viewing lounge. The renovated restaurant, named “Skybar”, offers visitors sweeping views of the airport’s runways, aircraft movement and the surrounding landscape. In addition, an observation deck provides a 360° panorama and hosts exhibitions related to aviation and the history of Frankfurt Airport.

The Flughafensturm is publicly accessible and has become a popular attraction for both pilots and passengers waiting for flights. The tower’s architectural significance lies in its integration of functional aviation infrastructure with leisure amenities, exemplifying the development of airport architecture in the late twentieth century. Its location on the airport grounds and its distinctive silhouette make it a landmark of Frankfurt’s modern skyline.
