Flerniveauanalyse

Flerniveauanalyse is a methodological framework used in the social and cognitive sciences to study the structure and dynamics of a level variable, referred to as flerniveau, which denotes a categorical or continuous stratification within a population or system. The approach emphasizes how different levels interact with outcomes and contexts, and how transitions between levels occur over time or across settings.

Origin and scope: The term arose in German-language scholarship in the early 21st century as researchers sought integrative methods for analyzing hierarchical data that combine qualitative and quantitative insights. It is applied in fields such as education, linguistics, organization studies, and epidemiology.

Methodology: Analysts define the level variable, select appropriate measurement instruments, and collect data across units (e.g., individuals, groups, time points). Analytical techniques often include multilevel modeling, latent class or latent profile analysis to identify discrete level groups, and growth or transition modeling to study changes over time. Mixed-methods components may involve qualitative coding to contextualize quantitative level assignments.

Outcomes and interpretation: The results describe how flerniveau levels relate to outcomes of interest, how prevalent different levels are, and how factors such as context or time influence level transitions.
