Flatlaying is a photography technique in which objects are arranged on a flat surface and photographed from directly above. The approach is used to present multiple items in a single frame, emphasizing organization, texture, color harmony, and relationships among items. It is widely employed in product, food, fashion, and lifestyle photography, as well as on social media and catalogs.

Setting typically involves a stable, horizontal surface and a neutral or themed background. Common equipment includes a camera with a fixed or tilting overhead mount, a dimmable light source or lightbox, diffusors, white foam boards or backdrops, and a selection of props such as fabrics, trays, or stands to create layers and depth.

Compositional goals include balance, visual rhythm, and clear focal points. Arrangements are often planned with a grid or known color palette, use negative space to reduce clutter, and consider depth by layering items or using props to introduce height variations. Consistency in styling reinforces a cohesive look across shots.

Lighting should be soft and even to minimize harsh shadows; natural daylight or diffused studio lighting is common. The camera is positioned directly above the scene to maintain a true flat lay, though slight angles can add interest.

Post-processing typically covers color correction, white balance, and sharpness, aiming for a clean, catalog-like result. Variations include slight angle shots or variable distances to vary perspective. Ethical considerations include accurately representing product sizes and features and properly crediting brands when required.
