Flankförslitning

Flankförslitning, also known as flank wear, is a type of wear that occurs on the flank face of a cutting tool, particularly in machining operations. The flank face is the surface of the cutting tool that follows the machined surface. Flank wear is characterized by the gradual removal of material from this surface, resulting in a flattened or worn area.

This wear mechanism is typically caused by a combination of abrasive and adhesive wear. Abrasive wear occurs as hard particles in the workpiece material rub against the cutting tool. Adhesive wear happens when the workpiece material and the tool material come into close contact at high temperatures and pressures, leading to the transfer of material from one surface to the other.

The presence of flank wear affects the cutting process in several ways. It can lead to an increase in cutting forces, higher temperatures, and a deterioration in the surface finish of the workpiece. In severe cases, excessive flank wear can cause tool failure and lead to the production of defective parts.

Factors influencing the rate of flank wear include the workpiece material properties, the cutting tool material, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and the presence of cutting fluids. For instance, machining harder materials or using higher cutting speeds generally accelerates flank wear.

Monitoring flank wear is crucial for optimizing machining processes and ensuring product quality. This can be done through visual inspection, measurement of tool dimensions, or by analyzing changes in cutting forces or sound. Strategies to mitigate flank wear include selecting appropriate tool materials, optimizing cutting parameters, and using effective lubrication and cooling systems.
