Fitusýrureddunar refers to the process of breaking down fatty acids. This metabolic pathway is crucial for energy production in many organisms, particularly when carbohydrates are scarce. The primary location for this process in eukaryotic cells is the mitochondrial matrix.

The process begins with the activation of a fatty acid, which requires ATP and is catalyzed by acyl-CoA synthetases. The activated fatty acid, now in the form of acyl-CoA, then enters the mitochondria. Inside the mitochondria, a series of four enzymatic reactions, collectively known as beta-oxidation, occurs. These reactions involve oxidation, hydration, oxidation, and cleavage. Each cycle of beta-oxidation shortens the fatty acid chain by two carbon atoms, producing one molecule of acetyl-CoA, one molecule of FADH2, and one molecule of NADH.

Acetyl-CoA, the two-carbon unit produced, can then enter the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle) to generate further ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. The reduced coenzymes FADH2 and NADH also contribute to ATP production by feeding into the electron transport chain.

The rate of fitusýrureddunar is regulated by the cell's energy demands. Hormones like glucagon and adrenaline can stimulate this process, especially during periods of fasting or increased physical activity. Conversely, high levels of insulin, which signal abundant glucose, tend to inhibit fitusýrureddunar.
