FireWireliitännän, also known as IEEE 1394, is a serial bus interface standard. It was developed by Apple and introduced in the early 1990s. FireWire was designed to provide high-speed data transfer and hot-plugging capabilities for connecting peripherals to computers. It allows for peer-to-peer communication, meaning devices can communicate directly with each other without needing to go through the host computer. This feature made it particularly useful for audio and video editing equipment.

There are different versions of FireWire, with varying data transfer speeds. FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394a) offers a maximum theoretical speed of 400 Mbps, while FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) doubles this to 800 Mbps. It can also support up to 63 devices on a single bus and offers power delivery, meaning connected devices can be powered through the FireWire cable itself. This eliminated the need for separate power adapters for many peripherals.

Despite its advantages, FireWire has largely been superseded by USB (Universal Serial Bus) technology, particularly USB 3.0 and later versions, which offer comparable or even higher speeds and broader compatibility with a wider range of devices. While still found on some professional audio interfaces and older digital camcorders, FireWire is less common on new consumer electronics.
