Firaxis

Firaxis Games is an American video game developer known for its focus on strategy games. The studio was founded in 1996 by Sid Meier and Jeff Briggs, along with other former MicroProse staff, after the dissolution of that company’s strategy division. It is based in Maryland, United States, and operates as a subsidiary of 2K Games, a label of Take-Two Interactive.

Firaxis is best known for creating and refining major strategy franchises. The studio released Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri in 1999, a notable turn-based strategy title set in a science fiction universe. It subsequently developed several entries in the Civilization series, including Civilization III (2001), Civilization IV (2005), Civilization V (2010), and Civilization VI (2016), continuing to support these titles with expansions and updates over the years. The Civilization games are recognized for their 4X gameplay, depth of diplomacy, and civilization-building mechanics.

In addition to Civilization, Firaxis revitalized the XCOM franchise with XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) and followed with XCOM 2 (2016), both of which received praise for their tactical combat and reimagined systems. The studio has maintained a reputation for accessible yet deeply strategic design, contributing to Take-Two Interactive’s lineup of strategy-focused titles through its ongoing development of new entries and ongoing content for its established franchises.
