Finantsvõimendust, often translated as financial leverage, refers to the use of borrowed money to increase the potential return on an investment. When a company or individual uses debt financing, such as loans or bonds, to fund its operations or acquisitions, it is employing financial leverage. The idea is that if the returns generated by the investment financed by debt exceed the cost of borrowing, the profit for the equity holders will be amplified.

A higher debt-to-equity ratio indicates a greater reliance on debt financing. While leverage can magnify profits, it also magnifies losses. For individuals, financial leverage might be used in real estate investments, where a mortgage allows them to purchase a property with a smaller upfront cash outlay. However, the increased risk associated with leverage means that careful consideration of borrowing costs, potential returns, and the ability to service the debt is crucial.
